What I do

I represent the Second District of Idaho in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Idaho is divided into two congressional districts—the Second District is made up of most of Boise and the eastern part of the state, while the first district includes the Panhandle and the western part of the state.  Each congressional district sends one Representative to Washington, D.C., so that the opinions of people in Idaho are considered when the government makes a decision.  This means that each Idahoan is represented by one Member of the House of Representatives and two Senators, which are elected state-wide.  The other Representative from Idaho is Raul Labradore; he and I work with Idaho’s Senators, Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, to promote Idaho issues and ideas.  While we are not all members of the same political party, we work closely together to promote Idaho’s best interests.

In Idaho I have offices in Boise, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and Pocatello where people can go to get help or information, which is the most important thing I do.  When I am in Washington, DC, my work centers on Idaho interests, including agriculture, natural resources, energy, and transportation-related matters.  I serve on the House Appropriations Committee, which has the important job of overseeing the budgets of federal government agencies, including the Department of Interior, the Department of Energy, the US Forest Service, and the EPA.

I spent much of my time in Washington, DC, meeting with Idahoans and Idaho organizations, participating in congressional hearings, and working with agencies and other Members of Congress to promote policies that enable government to work for the people.  When I am in Idaho, I often have the opportunity to visit businesses, schools, farms, and hospitals throughout the state, which is one of my favorite things to do.  As a lifelong Idahoan, I am always impressed with the hard work ethic, resourcefulness, and values of my neighbors throughout the state, and it is an honor to work for you in Congress.
