Congressman Simpson's Update

October 8th, 2021

Spending $5.5 Trillion

100 us dollar bill

Democrats are committed to their $5.5 trillion spending and tax spree - one they have misleadingly claimed will cost us nothing.

The truth is, their plans will cost us quite a lot. This is what we know:

  • American families and job creators can expect $2.1 trillion in new taxes
  • Despite a worker shortage, they will create a $3.5 billion program of Civilian Climate activists to promote the Green New Deal
  • The Corporate Tax Rate will increase to one of the highest levels in the world - giving China a competitive advantage.
  • The U.S. debt will increase by $2.4 trillion.

Hyde Amendment in Jeopardy

For over 40 years, Republicans and Democrats have agreed that taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund abortions. Recently, Democrats in Congress have tried to remove the bipartisan Hyde Amendment from their spending plans - President Biden seems content on letting that happen.

I have always been a supporter of the Hyde Amendment, and I oppose any legislation that allows taxpayer-funded abortions.

Soul of the Snake - "Trout Week"

“The issue of dams and recovery of Snake River salmon has been an issue in Idaho for 50 years...We are going to have to look at things differently in the Northwest."

I was honored to join Trout Unlimited for the inaugural "Trout Week" for a discussion with Nez Perce Vice-Chairman Shannon Wheeler and others on the Soul of the Snake River.

One thing is certain, the status-quo is not working for Idaho salmon. In order to make any meaningful change and prevent the extinction of this iconic species, we must allow for a process that will replace the value that the Four Lower Snake River Dams provide.

Reps Simpson, DelBene lead Bipartisan push to halt Post Office Consolidations

Last week I joined Rep. DelBene (D-WA) in leading a bipartisan effort to stop the consolidation of postal facilities across the country. A letter signed by 40 House lawmakers was sent to Postmaster General DeJoy outlining our concerns.

In May, the USPS announced that 18 postal facilities - including one in Pocatello, ID -  would resume consolidation later in 2021 in an attempt to save money and modernize the Postal Service.

We are worried that moving forward with these plans would increase service delays, impact many local economies, and may not achieve the goals of the USPS. Congress must receive more information before any consolidations are made.
