The Appropriations Committee’s first and foremost priority is oversight. When I served as Chairman of the House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee during the first session of the 113th Congress, I held 18 budget and oversight hearings during the first two months of the FY14 budget cycle. As Chairman of the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee, I chaired 8 budget and oversight hearings for the FY15 budget cycle. During these hearings, I questioned heads of departments and agencies about how they had spent money appropriated by the subcommittee in previous years in order to hold them accountable and carefully examined spending proposals included in the President’s budget request.
In addition to the oversight hearings I chaired, I also participated in oversight hearings in my role as a member of the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee.
