Rep. Simpson Cosponsors Bill to Include Phosphate & Potash as Critical Minerals

WASHINGTON— Today, Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson cosponsored legislation, H.R. 4059, to include phosphate and potash on the final list of critical minerals of the Department of the Interior. Potash and phosphate are essential nutrients used to support plant growth, enhance water retention, and increase crop yield and disease resistance.

This bipartisan bill is led by Reps. Kat Cammack (R-FL-03), Barry Moore (R-AL-02), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI-07), and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-19).

“Southeast Idaho is home to one of the world’s most significant phosphate reserves – reserves that have been in production for well over 65 years,” said Rep. Simpson. “Idaho’s agriculture and food sector keep Americans fed and plays an important role in our nation’s economy. Adding phosphate and potash to the Critical Minerals List will encourage domestic production and keep our food supply robust and secure. America has always been the leader in food supply and security, but the threat posed by our foreign adversaries is significant. Food security is national security, and adding these resources to the list of critical minerals of the Department of Interior will protect the Gem State's producers, farmers, and economic output.”

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) is the lead sponsor of the legislation in the U.S. Senate.
