Simpson Supports the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act of 2023

I applaud the passage of H.R. 26, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, legislation I have historically supported.

H.R. 26, first introduced by Representative Ann Wagner (R-MO), will ensure that a child who survives a failed abortion be given the same care as any other child born alive at the same gestational age and will create criminal penalties for health care providers who fail to do so.

After House Democrats’ continuous efforts to block this legislation, I welcome Speaker McCarthy’s prompt action to bring this bill to the floor. As nationwide debates on the topic of abortion continue to rage, this bill will protect the most basic and inherent human right to life—a cause I will always lend my support to.

Energy Security is National Security

This week the House overwhelmingly passed H.R. 22, the Protecting America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve from China Act — a much needed check on the Biden Admin’s irresponsible use of our strategic petroleum reserves. As gas prices have soared over the last two years, President Biden has drained our strategic reserves and even allowed the sale of these crucial reserves to China.

Energy security is national security, and countering China's economic growth is one of our great geopolitical challenges today. I am proud to support this legislation and American energy dominance.

I am announcing today the candidates nominated for potential appointment to one of our nation’s service academies. Nominees show excellence in academics, volunteering in their communities, and participation in extra-curricular activities. In addition to these accomplishments, candidates need to obtain a congressional nomination.

This year I nominated nine candidates to the United States Air Force Academy, five to the United States Military Academy, 10 to the United States Naval Academy, and four to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Many candidates earned nominations to multiple academies.

I am pleased to nominate these promising young Idahoans, and commend them for their notable achievements and for their honorable desire to serve this nation. The future is in good hands and I wish each nominee continued success in their endeavors.

This Week in Washington

The 118th Congress is off to a busy start. I was glad to vote in support of the following bills:

H.R.23 - Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act.

H.Res.11 - Establishing the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.

H.R.26 - Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act

H.R.22 - Protecting America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve from China Act

H.Res.12 - Establishing a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government as a select investigative subcommittee of the Committee on the Judiciary.

H.Con.Res.3 - Expressing the sense of Congress condemning the recent attacks on pro-life facilities, groups, and churches.

I was also grateful for the opportunity to visit with NEH Chair Shelly Lowe and Sr. Deputy Chair Tony Mitchell. It was great to discuss the impact of the National Endowment of the Humanities to Idaho communities.
