National Institutes of Health

The NIH has a mission to pursue knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.  The NIH fulfills its mission by fostering fundamental and creative discoveries, innovative research and developing scientific, human and physical resources that will assure the nation’s capability to prevent and treat disease.  NIH also seeks to expand the knowledge base in medical and associated sciences in order to enhance the nation’s economic well-being and ensure a continued high return on the public’s investment in research.

I believe we should fully fund the NIH.  As a former health care provider, I understand how vitally important NIH research is.  I am proud to strongly support the NIH and provide it with the funding it needs to fulfill its mission. You may be interested to know that I am a member of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee which funds NIH. I am pleased to report that NIH received a $2 billion increase in both fiscal year 2016 and fiscal year 2017 to expand their life saving research initiatives.  I look forward to continuing to help NIH fulfill its mission which ultimately benefit all of our health and quality of life.
