Rep. Simpson Joins Letter to Speaker Johnson Urging Passage of 2023 Farm Bill

WASHINGTON— This week, Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson signed a letter to newly-elected Speaker Johnson urging the passage of the 2023 Farm Bill. This letter, led by Rep. Brad Finstad (MN-01) and more than 60 Members of the House of Representatives, reaffirms their commitment to passing a Farm Bill that supports rural America and invests in critical programs for agricultural producers, including a strong farm safety net and crop insurance program.

“Idaho is home to nearly 25,000 farms and ranches, and the Farm Bill is critical for Idaho’s agriculture communities,” said Rep. Simpson. “Congress has a responsibility to pass a Farm Bill that ensures our nation's farmers, ranchers, and rural communities are supported and remain strong. We must swiftly take up consideration of the 2023 Farm Bill, and I urge Speaker Johnson to prioritize this critical bill. Supporting Idaho’s agriculture is one of my top priorities, and I am confident that Congress will pass a strong Farm Bill that stands with Gem State producers and farmers.”

“America’s dedicated farmers and ranchers go to work every day to produce the safest, most abundant, and affordable food, fuel, and fiber supply in the world,” said Rep. Finstad. “In Congress, we have a responsibility to reciprocate that dedication by passing a Farm Bill that puts our producers and rural communities first, which is why I am proud to lead my House Republican colleagues in urging Speaker Johnson to prioritize the passage of a strong, effective Farm Bill as soon as possible.”

Highlights of the letter are below.

“Simply put, farm and food security is national security. For a mere one-fifth of one percent of federal spending, the farm safety net, including commodity support programs and crop insurance, provides farmers and ranchers the foundation they need to manage risk, pass their farm or ranch down to the next generation, and continue producing the highest quality, lowest cost food, fuel, fiber, and forestry products in the world.

“The Farm Bill is a critical agenda item that must be addressed this Congress. We urge you and the Conference at-large to be united in ensuring swift passage of a strong Farm Bill that is written by farmers, for farmers, and by rural communities, for rural communities – supporting the farm, ranch, and forester families we represent.”
