Simpson Joins Colleagues Rejecting Ministry of Truth

Washington, D.C. – Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson this week signed a letter and cosponsored a bill to shut down President Biden’s ‘Disinformation Governance Board,’ sometimes referred to as the ‘Ministry of Truth.’

“The Department of Homeland Security’s mismanagement has enflamed the crisis at our Southern Border, as demonstrated by the 1.5 million border arrests made in the last six months on this Administration’s watch,” said Congressman Simpson.  “I remain steadfast in my defense of Americans’ First Amendment right to free speech, online and everywhere else. While disinformation is something that every American should be aware of, and in some instances can create serious public safety consequences, it is hard for me to see this particular action as anything other than what it truly is: a distraction from the misguided policies of this Administration and Democrats in Congress.”

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently announced the formation of a “Disinformation Governance Board,” charged with the vague mission of combatting falsehoods that threaten homeland security.  The board has specified no clear plan of action or established protocols to accomplish this mission.  Congressman Simpson joined over 170 of his Republican colleagues in conducting necessary oversight of this proposed disinformation panel through signing a letter to Secretary Mayorkas requesting more information and cosponsoring H.R. 7569, the Protecting Free Speech Act.  The letter raised concerns that the board will be used by the Administration as a political tool to limit the fundamental first amendment rights of Americans with whom they may disagree, rather than for security purposes as they suggest.  H.R. 7569, the Protecting Free Speech Act, is authored by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and would prevent taxpayer funds from being used to potentially restrict the constitutional right of free speech.

“America is facing real challenges—self-imposed restrictions on domestic energy production, along with geopolitical uncertainties, have sent gas prices skyrocketing to their highest levels in decades,” said Simpson.  “The reckless spending spree led by President Biden, Speaker Pelosi and their progressive allies has resulted in record inflation that is making it more expensive to buy groceries and make ends meet.  President Biden needs to worry less about putting the government in charge of the ‘truth’ and get to work on solutions for the very real problems that are facing our country.”
