WASHINGTON— Today, the House Committee on Appropriations voted to advance the Fiscal Year 2024 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies bill. Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson highlighted the inclusion of the Stanley Workforce Housing Economic Development Initiative at his request through Community Project Funding (CPF). “Between high construction costs, the short tourist season, and the lack of available land, temporary and permanent employees throughout Stanley have struggled to find adequate housing,” said Rep. Simpson. “Funding affordable workforce housing will make a significant and immediate impact on Stanley employees and the community, which is why I am proud to lead this initiative.” “The availability of affordable housing rental units is greatly inadequate to satisfy the demand for permanent and seasonal workers within the city. As a result, the local economy suffers, and people who want to live and work in the community leave the area,” said Steve Botti, Stanley City Mayor. “Funding for this project will allow Stanley to thrive as a community and better provide the services needed to support the recreation and tourism industry in central Idaho. Increasing numbers of Idahoans desire to enjoy the scenic wonders and recreational opportunities in the Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountains and the entire Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Solving the workforce housing problem will position Stanley to help Idahoans enjoy these treasured landscapes.” This funding will be used to construct affordable housing for up to 80 temporary and permanent employees and their families in Stanley, Idaho. Additionally, this project would provide significant relief to that shortage and, by making year-round housing available, would provide better opportunities for economic growth. Funding for the Stanley Workforce Housing Economic Development Initiative is a part of the Fiscal Year 2024 funding package for the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies. This funding package will now go to the full floor of the House of Representatives for a vote. |
